Chocolate Box lives and is now accepting nominations! This year you can nominate up to seven fandoms and seven relationships.

You can find the tag set here!

In terms of nominations generally:

• just about any fandom is eligible;
• Please remember that "Character A/Character B" is shipfic, "Character A & Character B" is genfic, and "Character A/Character B & Character C" is shipfic that also has a gen component;
• If you are nominating a character that has multiple versions across canons, please specify which one;
• There is no limit on the number of characters that can be in a combination other than the AO3 character limit;
• Objects can be nominated in tags;
• Crossovers must be nominated in "Crossover Fandom", which is already nominated. Crossovers that are not nominated in this fandom will be deleted.
• Original Works are okay and I have nominated that fandom for you already;
• You will be required to offer two tags per fandom on signups (unless only one relationship tag is nominated), so please keep that in mind when nominating.

I'm seeing a lot of "crossover" ship nominations that are actually just Star Wars ships from different installments of the franchise, which seems like a bizarre use of "crossover" to me when "Star Wars - All Media Types" is right there. So just checking, but are we not supposed to nominate "Star Wars - All Media Types" or "Marvel Cinematic Universe" and the like, or something?

The AO3 FAQ says "We will be posting to the comm with how larger continuities have been nominated so that participants can decide how they should be grouped." but I don't see anything yet.

Star Wars was decided in previous years to split it up into the individual series, as while a person may be familiar with the Prequel movies, they may not be familiar with the Clone Wars material, or the books. We're open for discussion on that point, however, and it may be that the groupings no longer work for people.

In terms of the MCU, the movies should be nominated as the MCU, and we are open to suggestions in relation to the television shows.

I've run across a bizarre issue and I don't know how it's showing on the back end.

I nominated the fandom The Arcana, and associated ships. In that same batch, I also nominated Original Works and one ship. AO3 was giving me trouble with the drop down menus so I hit submit... and suddenly "The Arcana" was listed as "Original Works." I tried to fix it somehow, but was unable to because Original Works was already approved, and now AO3 keeps giving me the error of "you seem to be trying to submit Original Works twice."

I canceled out of editing the submissions but both slots still show as Original Works for me, with The Arcana ships listed under original works. :/ Ships involving Julian Devorak, Lucio, Asra, and Male Apprentice all belong under The Arcana, if for some reason you're seeing it under Original Works.

If it's under the correct fandom on your end, I'll just figure out a workaround for my nominations.

Hey mods! Would it be possible to change Street Fighter II movie (anime & manga) to Street Fighter the movie (movies)? I meant the latter when I nominated it, and imo the canons are different enough to warrant the distinction.

Just confirming - last year, it was decided to merge Homestuck and Hiveswap. I'd like to nom some Hiveswap Friendsim relationships; should I do that under Homestuck, based on last year's precedent? Thanks!

To tell the truth, I fell out of Homestuck ages ago. Is it in the same "universe" as the Homestuck series, or an alternate one (insofar as you can have an "alternate" Homestuck universe...)?

Animorphs is a canonical book tag under the author name of "Katherine A Applegate," this year its been nominated under "Ka applegate" and is uncategorized. Would it be possible to change that so its easier to find?

They are! Our rule on tags is that it must be a nomination that can be clearly understood by others as to what you mean; those tags are totally okay.

Under DC's Arrowverse you have a lot of cape names instead of the character names.

Hi mods, AO3 recently split men's and women's hockey into two separate canonicals (Men's Hockey RPF and Women's Hockey RPF). Would it be possible for the two to be combined under Hockey RPF for the sake of nominations? It makes more sense than separating them, as there is quite a bit of crossover between men's and women's hockey, and it keeps you from having to determine which fandom any het pairings belong to.

Sure, we can do that! We'll get that done once we've approved all of our backlogged tags, as it will be a little fiddly to associate everything correctly.

Thank you for hosting, mods! Quick question: does a canon need to be fully released to be eligible for nomination, or can a canon be nommed based on a trailer only?

Like, if I wanted to request ships including characters from the Men in Black International trailer, would those be approved? Or does the canon have to be fully released by end of noms (or end of sign ups)?

No harm either way, just want to check before using a nom slot. Thanks!

One of my nominated fandoms got accepted twice: both as "WorldEnd: What do you do at the end of the world? Are you busy? Will you save us?" and as "終末なにしてますか? 忙しいですか? 救ってもらっていいですか? | SukaSuka | WorldEnd (Anime)"

They're the same fandom. The former is a synonym of the latter and the latter is technically the canonical, but I originally nominated it as the former. The pairing I nominated, Willem Kmetsch/Chtholly Nota Seniorious (World End), is showing up under the latter tag.

Something odd happened to my Vampyr nominations as they got approved. One nom (Sean Hampton & Old Bridget) is now in my list twice, but the nom Sean Hampton/Geoffrey McCullum vanished (and is not in the tagset, either). Also, Sean Hampton/Tom Watts lost the "S" on Sean (it's approved in the tagset as ean Hampton/Tom Watts). I agonised over my choices here for a long time, heh, as one does, so I'm fairly sure I didn't put it like that. Just wanted to let you know in case it's another colourful AO3 bug, haha.

Hi there! Thank you for running this exchange again. I goofed and left a comment on an old post while not logged in -- let me rewrite it here, with updates.

All the relationships on my noms page have a green checkmark next to them. But I'm not seeing most of them in the tagset, even with all categories expanded. For example, I nominated seven ships for Attack on Titan, but the only one I see in the tagset is Armin Arlert/Jean Kirstein. I have three fandoms I don't see represented at all in the tagset: Vatican Miracle Examiner, Doctrine of Labyrinths, and The Collared Knight (the last of which has no works on AO3 yet). VME was definitely there the other day. Also, there are no crossovers in the tagset, either. Is it just that they still need to be wrangled?

Hi. I'm roguefaerie on AO3. This is my first time doing Chocolate Box. I nominated before leaving for the holidays because the noms were in full swing. I may end up with some regrets about doing it on the early side. But that said...I nominated some SMALL fandoms but that have been coming up in other exchanges but not getting fics (not a complaint, just background). I promise all the characters nominated are really in the fandoms I chose. I love side characters and also like ensemble gen type stuff so where there was room for that I tried to add a few more characters who don't have canonical tags yet. If anyone can back me up on these while I'm not available that's great, but I'll try to answer any questions about them if they come up and aren't fielded by someone else. I'll definitely be back on the 26th.

Those nominations are eligible! You nominate them in the fandom where the canon character comes from.
