Chocolate Box lives and is now accepting nominations! You are able to nominate up to seven fandoms and seven relationships in those fandoms.

You can find the tag set here!

This year, we are changing how nominations are to be formatted! This is to hopefully reduce duplicate nominations, reduce tag migration, and make the nomination process smoother for everyone. It is as follows:

• Characters in any given relationship are to be ordered in alphabetical order with reference to the first part of each character's name being used, as you read left to right. That is, if the family name goes first, then by family name. If the given name comes first, by given name. This does not apply to Original Works or Crossovers.
• All nominations must contain at the end, inside parentheses (), the name of the canon (or a truncated version as necessary).

A nomination that does not meet this criteria will not be approved.

In terms of nominations generally:

• just about any fandom is eligible;
• You must nominate relationship(s) inside a fandom;
• The characters must appear in the fandom nominated;
• Please remember that "Character A/Character B" is shipfic, "Character A & Character B" is genfic, and "Character A/Character B & Character C" is shipfic that also has a gen component involving Character C;
• There is no limit on the number of characters that can be in a combination other than the AO3 character limit;
• Objects can be nominated in tags;
• Crossovers must be nominated in "Crossover Fandom", which is already nominated.
• Original Works are okay and we have nominated that fandom for you already;

You will be required to offer two tags per fandom on signups (unless only one relationship tag is nominated), so please keep that in mind when nominating.

For specific fandoms:

• Dragon Age - please nominate as "Dragon Age (Video Games)"
• Marvel Cinematic Universe - please only nominate characters who have appeared in the movies into this fandom.
• Marvel Netflix series - please nominated as "Defenders (TV)".
• Star Wars - please nominate in terms of "Star Wars Prequel Trilogy", "Star Wars Original Trilogy", "Star Wars Sequel Trilogy" etc.
• Arrowverse - please nominate into "DC's Arrowverse" and not individual titles.
• Angel and Buffyverse - please nominate into "Buffyverse (TV)"
• Stargate - please nominate as "Stargate - All Media Types"
• Marvel and DC Comics - please nominate main continuity into Marvel (Comics) and DCU (Comics), and you can put specific runs into the parentheses instead of the fandom for these nominations only. Titles that are explicit alternate realities such as Age of Apocalypse, Marvel 1602 etc. can be nominated as specific titles.
• Pokemon - please nominate the main games under "Pocket Monsters | Pokemon (Main Video Game Series)", the anime under "Pocket Monsters | Pokemon (Anime)", and everything else under specific titles.

Okay to nominate the Disney+ shows as separate fandoms? (e.g. Falcon & Winter Soldier, Loki, etc.) This seems to be the way most exchanges are going and it definitely works best for me!

That's a good question - we'll put it up for discussion in our next post, because it'll have implications in terms of crossovers as well.

What takes precedence between the nomination guidelines outlined here and the message in the nomination page that says "The autocomplete lists canonical tags for you. Please choose the canonical version of your tag if there is one."?

Eg, I have a canonical that goes "Volfred Sandalwood/Tariq | The Lone Minstrel". Should I stick with the autocomplete or fill in "Tariq | The Lone Minstrel/Volfred Sandalwood (Pyre)"?

The guidelines we have here take precedence. To use your example, it should be "Tariq | The Lone Minstrel/Volfred Sandalwood (Pyre)".

If nominating a "Character A/Character B & Character C" relationship, is it alright if that slightly alters the alphabetical order to accommodate writing the romantic ship first? (ie. if Character C's name comes earlier in the alphabet than Character B, but Character C is not in the romantic relationship)

For MCU -- if we're nominating based on an MCU movie, can we/should we be treating anyone who shows up in an MCU movie as falling under this umbrella, even if the character is primarily associated with another fandom/franchise?

I'm thinking particularly of how to deal with the *waves hands* everything of Spider-Man: No Way Home. (I don't want to get into too much detail because spoilers, but I can in another comment with big spoiler warning if the mod wants).

Generally speaking, everyone who appears in an MCU movie is eligible to be nominated into Marvel Cinematic Universe. I'm not going to be watching No Way Home, so if you need to spoil me to explain your question further, go ahead!

Should I nominate a fandom using a canonical, over-general tag, or a more specific tag that isn't canonized?

I nominated "Bionicle (Generation 1)" in Yuletide, because I'm only a fan of G1, but the only canonical fandom tag is "Bionicle - All Media Types", which since G2 came to be in 2015 covers both G1 and G2. Now I want to nominate Bionicle (Generation 1) here too.

If we are nominating a 3+ person crossover ship between two fandoms, should we nominate it as Person A (Fandom 1)/Person B (Fandom 1)/Person C (Fandom 2), or is it okay to nominate it as Person A/Person B (Fandom 1)/Person C (Fandom 2)?

In addition, I'm planning on nominating for the Tales of Arcadia fandom, which is comprised of three TV shows (as well as side novels and a sequel movie). AO3 does not disambiguate between all the various shows, but FFN does. In addition, there is a large amount of crossover between the three shows. Should I disambiguate the shows for my Tales of Arcadia nominations, or is it okay to just nominate everything under the Tales of Arcadia tag? And if I disambiguate, should I list characters by the show they first appear in or the show they're most prominent in?

EDIT: Similarly, should I disambiguate between the various series in the Dimension 20 franchise, even though AO3 doesn't disambiguate them?

In answer to your questions, in turn:

1) It's okay to nominate Person A/Person B (Fandom 1)/Person C (Fandom 2), especially as we know that character limits become an issue for the larger fandoms.

2) Are the three shows etc. in continuity with one another? My take on what you've said is that they are, and so the group nomination would be fine, and disambiguation should be Tales of Arcadia.

3) There's actually nominations for the Dimension 20 individual campaigns and we're going to be doing a post about that and Critical Role very soon to open it up to the community, as neither of us are familiar with the canons.

For Mass Effect, should I alphabetize "Female Shepard" according to S or F? I'm assuming S, because "Female/Male" isn't Shepard's actual given name and their only canonical name is Shepard, but I'd like to check.

Hi! Is it ok to use Star Wars Legends: All Media Tags as a fandom? At least to cover the different Legends books?

Also, can we put all Star Wars-specific Crossovers (e.g. Bodhi Rook (Rogue One)/Luke Skywalker (SW OT) into one Star Wars Crossover fandom? Or would you rather us use the usual Crossover fandom box?

Hi--ran into a problem. I was trying to nominate 'Female Player/Haley (Stardew Valley)' and I got an error message saying:

"The tag Female Player/Haley (Stardew Valley) is already in the archive as a Character tag. (All tags have to be unique.) Try being more specific, for instance tacking on the medium or the fandom."

I'm really sorry if this is an overly nitpicky question, but: I think it will let it through if I nom either 'Female Player/Haley (Stardew)' or 'Haley/Female Player (Stardew Valley)'. Do you prefer one over the other? Another ship is already in the tagset disambiguated as Stardew Valley rather than just Stardew, and I don't know how much it matters, if at all, to keep the disambigs consistent.

We'd prefer "Female Player/Haley (Stardew)". The disambiguation isn't super important, it's just that if a tag's associations get broken (which can happen sometimes) we know where it goes or if it wanders we know where to put it back. Stardew is fine, because it's the first word of the name.

Painted Skin: The Guo Jingming edition (2020) is in the uncategorized section and should be under film.

I see other fandoms in that section that have their medium clearly listed so I'm not sure if it's just that they aren't canonical.

The other problem with the Painted Skin nomination is it's also not listing its requested relationships, unlike the other canons in that section.

In answer to your questions:

1) Wuxin: The Monster Killer 2015 TV is not a canonical tag, and the only people who can wrangle non-canonical tags to make them canonical (including associating them with a medium) are AO3 tag wranglers. We're not tag wranglers, and so can't make it canonical.

2) We can see that your nomination is sitting in "Unassociated Characters & Relationships" at the bottom. This is because the association between fandom and relationship was broken (this happens sometimes) and we will need to manually reassociate them. That will happen.

It looks like a lot of people are disambiguating original works by putting the genders (e.g. F/F, F/M, etc.) and (OW) at the end of the tag. Is that the preferred way to do original works tags, or does it matter?

It honestly doesn't matter too much with Original Works - should they wander or become disassociated from its fandom they tend to stick out from the rest of the nominations and so are easy to spot and identify where they belong.
